Profile

David Jarvis was born in Yorkshire, grew up in Lincolnshire and moved to London to attend Camberwell College of Art where he studied Fine Art. After time working as an artist and educator he returned to Camberwell to take an MA in Fine Art Printmaking.

In drawing and painting he works in most graphic and paint medea. He produces unique and editioned prints in lithography, intaglio, relief, screenprinting and fusions of medea.

Study of botanical material is central to his work. He constantly gathers information through direct observational drawing, examining structure and patterns of growth.

Music is another strong influence on his work, in particular the work of Berg, Debussy, Janacek and Sibelius, principally for the qualities of rhythm and a-rhythmic juxtapositions, layers and structures.

Ambiguity and transcience are major interests. These are explored through a variety of themes, for example the iridescent qualities of  local colour, the restructuring effects of light, and the question of reality between a subject and its reflection.

Information is layered into work where the theme of reflection is both a visual phenomenon and a mental process.
